Delaware Man Accused Of Bringing Gun To Westfield Grade School Indicted

The Delaware man who was arrested in June when authorities said he was found with a handgun, hollow-point bullets and other weaponry in the parking lot of a Westfield grade school has been indicted by a grand jury, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said.

Thomas J. Wilkie, 46, of Bear, has been charged with possession of a weapon on or near the grounds of an educational institution, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and other offenses.

Police in Delaware's New Castle County called Westfield police and alerted them June 13 that Wilkie was headed to Tamaques Elementary School and that he may be armed. Wilkie had reportedly been involved romantically with a teacher at the school.

Officers found Wilkie sitting in the front seat of his 2019 Mitsubishi SUV, which was parked in the school's lot, authorities said. The regular school day had ended but an after-school program was in progress when officers arrived shortly before 4 p.m.

In addition to the gun, police said WIlkie was in possession of a folding knife, two loaded clips of ammunition and an additional 130 rounds, which were stored in the trunk.

Wilkie was taken into custody without incident. The school was placed on lock down and there were no injuries.

WIlkie faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted, the prosecutor's office said.
